Vedensky District

Vedensky District ( _ru. Веде́нский райо́н) is a raion (district) of the Chechen Republic, Russia. It is located in the south-eastern area of the Republic. Its administrative center is the village of Vedeno. 2004 official data reported 33 villages with a population of 36,087 people, including 9,103 children (0-17 years of age), 2,630 children (under six years of age), and 14,532 women. 2002 population—23,390; 1995—32,000.

Severe health problems in the Vedensky district are interlinked with the critical socio-economic situation in the region. Access to district health services remains a problem due to the presence of federal and Chechen law enforcement and on-going military activities in the area. [World Health Organization, Selected Health Facilities in Nine Districts of the Chechen Republic 2005] In 1999 it was reported that the influx of refugees to the Vedensky (Vedeno) district, 55 km southeast of Grozny, led to the rise of the population in the area from 30,000 before fighting began to about 90,000 according to reports from Chechnya. [Chechnya Crisis - Emergency Relief For Displaced Date Issued: November 3, 1999]

The District is also home to the Turkxoj and Elistanzhxoj teips (clans)and Chechen leader Shamil Basaev was born in the village of Dyshne-Vedeno.
