- The Cubby Creatures
The Cubby Creatures are the musical arm of
The Cubby , aSan Francisco -basedart collective devoted to doing the work of the Cubby, their higher power, which they say inspires them to create art, live art, and admire art for the sake of spiritual and thereby socialrevolution . One of their mottos is "Revolution through inspired living."Biography
The Cubby Creatures were born out of San Francisco's Mission District in 1997, becoming the musical arm of an art group called the Cubby. Jol and Brian Weaver formed the group and the band's first lineup featured Emily (then unmarried) Davis on violin, Karl (not yet K.M.) Soehnlein on clarinet, and Matt (budding graphic designer) Mahnke on drums, while Jol played guitar against Brian Weaver's bass and the two shared vocal duties.
When Matt left the band--shortly after shepherding the band through its first show at Artists Television Access in San Francisco (Dec. 7, 1997)--to go off and create the Cubby's online web presence (since 1998) at Cubby.net, Jason Gonzalez took Matt's drum stool and carried on the beat, Bill Fisher, a friend of Jason's, soon came to the attention of the other Cubby Creatures, who cast him to play the lead role in the Cubby Creatures' 1998 rock opera The World of Tina and thereafter requested that he join the band as a regular, which he did, taking up the keyboard and sharing vocal responsibilities with Jol and Brian. After Jol's exit from the band in 2001, Bill took up the guitar as well.
The recorded output of the Cubby Creatures has mutated with the changes in the band. "A Very Cubby Christmas" (1997) is an audio collage. "The Blessed Invention" (2000) was the first full-length album. It caught the attention of San Francisco's
Rodent Records , and the Cubby Creatures were asked to join the roster of Rodent bands. The EP, "Who Remembers Kathy Barra?" (2001), released on CD and 10-inch vinyl, was the band's first with Rodent Records. "Three Sides of Cubby"(2002) came out on 7-inch vinyl and contained the Cubby Creatures' version of Nick Drake's "Fly". Meanwhile, Rodent Records moved to a larger space, but it took years to rebuild their recording studio. The band's full-length "After the Deprogramming" was recorded and engineered at the new Rodent facility and released by Rodent Records in 2005.Discography
