Richard Edwards (Royal Navy officer)

Richard Edwards (? – 1773) naval officer and Commodore Governor of Newfoundland, died England.

Edwards was a captain in the Royal Navy and was appointed governor of Newfoundland in 1746. In his naval career he was captain of several vessels: the "Fox", the "Torrington", the "Princess Mary", and the "Princess Amelia".

Service history::* 1740 captain in the Royal Navy,:* 1740 promoted lieutenant,:* 1746 ordered to Louisbourg to help Commodore Warren's siege of the fort,:* 1746 appointed governor of Newfoundland.

:Note: The position of governor of the colony had temporarily lapsed after the departure of Richard Edwards and therefore Douglas was not a governor of the island. Also, no commodore or governor was sent in 1747, the next governor was Charles Watson in 1748.
