The school was founded in 1912 by Rev Dr. F. Coffin to complement the education offered to boys by Naparima College. It is located on La Pique Hill (part of San Fernando Hill) which overlooks San Fernando.

Motto
The school's motto is non nobis solum sed omnibus which is Latin for Not for ourselves only but for others.
In keeping with these words to live by, students are required to complete forty hours of community service during the first four years (forms 1-4) of their secondary education at Naparima Girls' High School.
Mission statement
To provide both staff and students (present and past) with an environment that is user friendly, within which they can locate and access material that can be used to solve information needs.
Vision
To deconstruct established ideals of learning and recreate a dynamic process of education which reforms and refashions itself according to individual needs and expectations. A process which extends beyond the boundaries of classroom, syllabus amd matriculation and presents instead, infinite possibilities through the ceaseless pursuit of and ultimate joy of knowledge.
School hymn
The school hymn is Youth Undaunted.The lyrics are:

The years 1928 to 1939 saw four changes of Acting Principals: Mrs. Irene Thompson-Kerster in 1928, Miss Margaret Scrimgeour in 1930, Mrs. Maude Howell-Dales in 1932 and Miss Bessie Bentley in 1936.
House system
The student population is broken down into five teams called 'houses'. The houses compete against each other in sporting, arts and cultural activities. All houses vie for the title "Best House" which is named at the end of every school year. Houses gain points and merits which are totalled, the highest scoring house receives the award. Points may be won for academic and non-academic excellence. Each house was named after a prominent female figure and also assigned a colour. The houses and their colours are:
- Archibald House - blue (named after Adella Archibald)
- Cavell House - green (named after Edith Cavell)
- Curie House - red (named after Marie Curie)
- Keller House - yellow (named after Helen Keller)
- Scrimgeour House - purple (named after Margaret Scrimgeour)

Entrance
Entry into this institution is done after writing SEA or Secondary Entrance Assessment. Naparima Girls' High School is most usually the first and most prominent choice when choosing which secondary school a child wishes to attend. Choices are made to be placed in secondary schools depending on how well one does in the exam.
