List of German language authors

List of German language authors

This list contains the names of notable individuals (of any ethnicity or nationality) who are considered authors of fictional and essayistic prose texts as well as dramas written in the German language. The list is composed of two groups::*notable dead writers of Literature (uppercase L intended). They have received international recognition as notable writers of German literature.:*notable living writers of Literature (uppercase L intended) and literature (widely conceived). Some have clearly received international recognition, while others might raise notability concerns. Living writers have been highlighted by a bullet point.

Editors familiar with contemporary German literature are particularly invited to contribute their input. If you add a name to the list, please also create an article stub.

Note that most mediaeval authors are alphabetised by their first names, as the sobriquet is not a surname.
