Sivagangai District is an administrative district of
Tamil Nadu state in southernIndia . The city ofSivaganga is the district headquarters.The district occupies an
area of 4086 km² and has apopulation of 1,155,356 (as of2001 ). It is 28.22% urbanised. [http://www.censusindiamaps.net/page/India_WhizMap/IndiaMap.htm]The district has a literacy of 72.66%, below the average for the state.
It is bounded on the north and northeast by
Pudukkottai District , on the southeast and south byRamanathapuram District , on the southwest byVirudhunagar District , and on the west byMadurai District , and on the northwest byTiruchirappalli District .Karaikudi is another important city in the district. Karaikudi known as the capital ofChettinad , which includes Karaikudi and the surrounding 74 villages. Chettinad is named for the prominent "NattukottaiChettiar s" orNagarathar . The Chettiars were a prosperous banking community who ventured overseas to do business in South and Southeast Asia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Karaikudi is also home of two famous Institutions,Alagappa University and CECRI (Central Electrochemical Research Institute). SivagangaExternal links
