Galindez Island

Galindez Island

Galindez Island is an island 0.5 miles (0.8 km) long, lying immediately east of Winter Island in the Argentine Islands, Wilhelm Archipelago. Discovered by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1903-05, under Charcot, who named it for Commander Ismael F. Galindez, Argentine Navy, who was dispatched in the in the "Uruguay" to search for Charcot, when the expedition was feared lost early in 1905.cite web| url=http://www.antarctida.kiev.ua/english/history.htm| title=Vernadsky Base: History| accessdate=2007-11-24] Recharted by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under Rymill, 1934-37.

The Ukrainian Vernadsky Research Base is at Marina Point on Galindez Island.
