It is run over a distance of 1,600 metres (approximately 1 mile) atLongchamp Racecourse , and it takes place annually in May.The race is the French equivalent of the English 2,000 Guineas and together with a similar race for fillies, the
Poule d'Essai des Pouliches , it was first run in 1883. Prior to this there had been a single race for both colts and fillies, the Poule d'Essai, which was first run in 1840 at the Champ de Mars, moving to Longchamp in 1857.The earlier version of the race was run forty times, having been cancelled in 1843 and 1844 due to a low number of entrants and in 1871 because of the
Franco-Prussian War . The present version was not held from 1915 to 1918 duringWorld War I and it was also disrupted throughWorld War II . There was no racing in France in the spring of 1940, but a substitute race combining both the "Poulains" and "Pouliches" was held in October at Auteuil. This was titled the Prix d'Essai and won by the coltDjebel . In 1943 the Poule d'Essai des Poulains was transferred to Tremblay and for the following two years it was run at Maisons-Laffitte, returning to Longchamp in 1946.The first foreign trained winner of the race was Recitation in 1981, trained in
England byGuy Harwood .Records
