Thomson River (Victoria)

Thomson River is a river in Victoria, Australia. It feeds from Baw Baw National Park and is dammed not far below its source by the Thomson River Dam. This water then supplies about 60% of Melbourne's water needs. This takes about 50% of the rivers natural flow, which places a great environmental stress downstream. It particularly affects the Gippsland Lakes, which include Lake Wellington, Lake Victoria and Lake King. This area has international significance as a Ramsar listed wetland site but it also affects fishing and recreation, which in turn reduces the tourist interest.
