Trowbridge Town was established in
1880 and were founding members of the "Bristol & District League" (nowWestern Football League ) in1892 . They won theWestern Football League 4 times in their history. Beginning in 1958, they played in the Southern League and eventually joined the Alliance Premier League in 1981, playing there for three seasons. However, with declining performances they found themselves in back in the lower tier of the Southern League and they folded after the 1997-98 season. Quickly reformed, the club joined theWiltshire League and gained promotion to the Premier Division at first attempt. After four seasons in the Premier, they were promoted to the Hellenic League.About
Trowbridge Town AFC was formed in the summer of 1998 following the demise of Trowbridge Town (1983) Ltd. Football supporters in the town were obviously saddened by the end of the Club and following a meeting of interested followers the new club was formed. The first year of its’ existence saw the Club with no team and no ground. A lot of time and effort put in by supporters of the Club resulted in finances being raised and eventually the Club joined the Wiltshire County League for the 1999-2000 Season.Success was achieved when the Club won the County Intermediate League in its first Season and following improvements to its Woodmarsh Ground joined the County Senior League the following Season. Consistent performances were achieved in this League with the Club reaching the final of both the County Senior Cup and League Knockout Cup in two successive seasons. The club completed the Wiltshire League Championship and Wilts Senior Cup double in 2003-2004 and this together with major ground improvements during the summer brought the reward of a place in the Hellenic League. The runners-up spot was achieved at the first attempt but promotion could not be taken due to ground requirements, something which was unfortunately repeated last season.Since its formation the emphasis has been placed on running a Members Clubs that keeps itself financially sound. The Membership total has remained at a consistent level and together with average attendances at home matches that would be the envy of many other Senior Clubs, interest in the Club has remained at a high level. From the first match played by the new Club the emphasis on the playing side has been based on Young players from the local areas (with a few exceptions). The club has always has a strong link with AFC Trowbridge Town Youth and a recent agreement to officially merge the two clubs will be completed during season 2007-2008. For a number of years, Trowbridge Town Youth FC has been one of the most successful youth football Clubs in the County and many of their players have progressed to the senior side. The future is bright with plans having been drawn up for a new ground opposite their current Woodmarsh home, in conjunction with a local businessman who owns the land. Planning permission is now being sought for this much needed leisure complex for the County Town, following detailed discussions with the Town Council. All in all, a good start has been made to the life of the new Club. Much work remains to be done although everyone concerned with the Club, particularly its members and supporters are confident Senior Football will remain in the Town for many years to come.
National cup accomplishments
They have also reached the First Round Proper of the
FA Cup 4 times in their history, most recently during the 1963-64 season when they fell 6-1 to Coventry City. They have never advanced past the 1st round of theFA Trophy in numerous attempts, however, in 1990-91, they reached the semifinals of theFA Vase .External links
