- Hermann Strack
Hermann Leberecht Strack (1848-1922) was a German
Protestant theologian andOrientalist ; born at BerlinMay 6 ,1848 . Since 1877 he was assistant professor ofOld Testament exegesis andSemitic languages at theUniversity of Berlin . He was the foremostChristian authority in Germany onTalmud ic andrabbinic literature , and studiedrabbinics underSteinschneider . Since the reappearance ofanti-Semitism in Germany, Strack had been the champion of theJew s against the attacks of such men as HofpredigerAdolf Stoecker , ProfessorAugust Rohling , and others. In 1885 Strack became the editor of "Nathanael. Zeitschrift für die Arbeit der Evangelischen Kirche an Israel", published atBerlin ; and in 1883 he founded the "Institutum Judaicum ", which aims at the conversion of Jews toChristianity . In the beginning of his career thePrussia n government sent Strack toSt. Petersburg to examine the Bible manuscripts there; on this occasion he examined also the antiquities of the Firkovich collection, which he declared to be forgeries. This claim was found to be untrue: the Firkovich collection is closely related toCairo Geniza material found bySolomon Schechter .elected works
