Urzhum ( _ru. Уржум) is a town in and the administrative center of
Urzhumsky District ofKirov Oblast ,Russia , located on the left bank of theUrzhumka River about ten kilometers from its confluence with theVyatka River . Population: 11,514 (2002 Census); 12,101 (1989 Census).History
Urzhum is first mentioned in 1554, as a
Mari town. It is commonly believed that "Urzhum" is translated from Mari as "Seen a Squirrel". In 1584, Urzhum is re-founded as a Russianfortress with the aim of keeping down Mari andTatar revolts. Town status granted in 1796.Famous people from Urzhum
