Greens Representation from Year to Year

The table below represents the the parliamentary representation of Greens politicians from 1983 to the present. Bob Brown was the first elected Greens representative, initially elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly in 1983. He was joined by Gerry Bates in 1986. By 2008, the number of Greens representatives had risen to 21.

The number of elected Greens, for any given year from 1983 to 2007, is based upon the number of M.P's at 31 December of the respective year. For 2008, the figure represents the number of M.P's from the 2nd half of 2008.

Note: In 1998, the number of members per electorate in the Tasmanian House of Assembly was reduced from seven to five, reducing the Greens' representation from 4 to 1. The Greens' representation has since recovered.

Note: In 2001, the Western Australian Greens' representation spiked as a result of a favourable preference deal. The representation has since dropped.
