Roy Gutman (born
March 5 ,1944 ,New York City ) is an American journalist and author.Gutman graduated from
Haverford College , in 1966, majoring inHistory , and fromLondon School of Economics in 1968 with a masters degree inInternational Relations .Roy Gutman joined
Newsday in January 1982 and served for eight years as National Security Reporter in Washington. While European Bureau Chief, from late 1989 to 1994, he reported the downfall of the Polish, East German, and Czechoslovak regimes, the opening of theBerlin Wall , the unification ofGermany , the first democratic elections in the formerEastern Bloc , and the violent disintegration ofYugoslavia . He is currently the Foreign Editor for Newsday in New York.Gutman's honors include the
Pulitzer Prize for international reporting, theGeorge Polk Award for foreign reporting, theSelden Ring Award for investigative reporting, and a special Human Rights in Media Award from theInternational League for Human Rights .Gutman was previously employed by
Reuters news agency, serving inBonn ,Vienna ,Belgrade ,London , and Washington. He served as Bureau Chief forEurope ,State Department Correspondent, and ChiefCapitol Hill Reporter. He has been aJennings Randolph senior fellow at theUnited States Institute of Peace .In 1988, Simon & Schuster published his book, . The
New York Times named it one of the best 200 books of the year, and the (London)Times Literary Supplement designated it the best American book of the year.
