Edgar Department Stores

Edgar Department Stores was a chain of department stores that was founded in Massachusetts. James Edgar an immigrant from Edinborough, Scotland opened the first Edgar's in Brockton, Massachusetts. James Edgar in December 1890 dressed up as Santa Claus to entertain the children of shoppers, thus becoming the first department store Santa. Fact|date=June 2008 Trains brought families from Boston and Providence to Edgar's to see Santa. The corporation filed for bankruptcy and closed its doors in 1986, soon after the chain was purchased by the Bradlees corporation. The Edgar chain also owned Almy's department store.

*Fall River, Massachusetts, This store opened in 1963. The space is now occupied by a Sears outlet and a Saver's store
*Dartmouth, Massachusetts: Dartmouth Mall
*Swansea, Massachusetts, This store opened in 1975. It is now a Macy's
