The Japanese river otter ("Lutra lutra whiteleyi"; Japanese: 日本獺, 日本川獺 "nihonkawauso" or "nipponkawauso") is a variety of otter formerly widespread in Japan. The last official sighting of one was in the southern part of Kochi Prefecture in 1979, and it may already be extinct. It is the animal symbol of Ehime Prefecture.
