It also owned the United States-based Tartan USA and Tartan Video. It is known for distributing Asian films, especially those in the horror and thriller genre, under their banner Tartan Asia Extreme. More recently, it has gained a reputation for releasing horror movies of other origin under its new label, Tartan Terror. Such films include "Battle Royale", the "Whispering Corridors" trilogy, "A Tale of Two Sisters", "Triad Election" (aka "Election 2" ), and "Oldboy".

Tartan Films USAIn the United States, Tartan Films also released other kinds of internationally acclaimed movies, such as "The Page Turner", "", ""Red Road"", "9 Songs", "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu", "The Cave of the Yellow Dog", and "Battle in Heaven".

In June 2008, Tartan went bankrupt, laid off its employees, and stopped operations. Technology

Tartan originally released all of its film on VHS videotape. Titles from its Asia Extreme and Tartan Terror labels were also released on VHS. As DVD became more popular, the company chose to release solely on this format and deleted the VHS back catalogue. Tartan also started to release some titles on Blu-Ray disc. Blu-Ray titles include "Oldboy", "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK", "Black Book", "Paranoid Park", "The Seventh Seal", "Sky Blue", and "The Proposition". Tartan always distributed film prints to movie theaters under the Metro Tartan banner.
