Professor Potter

Professor Potter

Professor Phineas Potter is a fictional character who has appeared in various Superman and Superboy stories published by DC Comics. The original version of Professor Potter is the uncle of Lana Lang (her mother's brother), and first appeared in "Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen" #22 in August 1957. A similar character, played by Sterling Holloway, occasionally appeared in the TV series, "Adventures of Superman".

An eccentric scientist, Professor Potter often appears in various stories as an inventor of odd or fantastical devices, such as a device that (in Potter's first appearance) briefly evolves Jimmy Olsen into a super-intelligent being from one million A.D. He also contributes his scientific prowess on occasion to assist the cast of Superboy/Superman characters.

Potter made sporadic appearances over the years; however, after John Byrne's revamp of Superman's mythos in 1986, Potter fell by the wayside as a character, largely being replaced in his role by Professor Hamilton. However, a modern version of Potter appeared in the 1990s "Superboy" title, as an employee of a branch of S.T.A.R. Labs in Hawaii.
