Russell Claude Smith (born
2 August 1963 ) is a Canadiannovelist , newspaper columnist, and expert on men's clothing and style. Smith is one of Canada's most famous "urban" novelists; that is, unlike the traditional perception ofCanadian literature as being about predominantly rural settings and themes, Smith writes specifically about big city life.He was born in
Johannesburg ,South Africa . Smith was educated at theUniversité de Paris andQueen's University . Smith has two weekly columns in "The Globe and Mail " newspaper. One is in the arts section and covers Canadian culture and the arts scene inToronto , and the other is in the fashion section and discusses men's clothing. In 2006, Smith hosted the summer series "And Sometimes Y ", an exploration oflanguage , onCBC Radio One . As of January 2007 a new season is being broadcast.
