Camp Merritt was a
military base in Cresskill, in Bergen County,New Jersey , that was activated for use inWorld War I . It was from this camp that thousands of soldiers were deployed toHoboken, New Jersey before being shipped off toEurope . Camp Merritt was decommissioned in November, 1919. Spanish flu throughout the area. The convert|66|ft|m|sing=on tall granite monument stands in the center of theCamp Merritt Memorial Circle at the intersection ofKnickerbocker Road and Madison Avenue. Camp Merritt is commemorated today by the conversion and expansion of a popular soldiers'theatre on the site of the camp into theelementary school of the same name.ee also
