History
The club was formed in 1921. Begun as a sporting club for members of the Onehunga Methodist Church, it was run for some time as part of the Onehunga Athletics Club before becoming the Onehunga Association Football Club. In 1965 it moved its premises to the Mangere area and changed its name to Onehunga-Mangere United. During the 1980s it became Onehunga Mangere United Sports Club after it expanded to include softball as a second sport.
Onehunga AFC won the Chatham Cup in 1954.
Derby
While there are many other football clubs close to the club, a loose derby exists with Mangere United due to name and location similarities between the clubs. In the derby context, Mangere United is known as Onehunga-Mangere United's cousins from the valley (Onehunga-Mangere United's home ground being on top of an extinct volcano).
