- Kastl Abbey
Kastl Abbey or Monastery (Kloster Kastl) is a former monastery of the
Benedictine Order in Kastl in theUpper Palatinate ,Bavaria .History
The monastery, dedicated to
Saint Peter , was founded in1103 , or shortly before, by Count Berengar I ofSulzbach together with Frederick and Otto, Counts of Kastl-Habsberg.It was dissolved in
1563 in the course of theReformation , but re-established as a Catholic monastery in1625 . From1636 the building was used by theJesuits , from1773 by theKnights Hospitaller s. Dissolved again in1803 , it was the seat of the Provincial Court until1862 .Since
1958 the buildings have housed a Hungarian secondary boarding school. After the 2005-2006 school year, the school shut down.Princess Anna
Anna, daughter of Emperor Louis IV, died here on
29 January 1319 aged three. The princess' body was not taken toMunich but entombed in the monastery. In1715 the body was removed from its tomb and kept in an oak cupboard. The body, preserved as a mummy, rested in a shrine in the entrance hall to the monastery church, where it could be viewed. The body was recently returned to its tomb to protect it from light damage and a large photo is on display instead.External links
