Evans Hall (UC Berkeley)

Evans Hall (UC Berkeley)

Evans Hall is the mathematics, statistics, and economics building at the University of California, Berkeley, situated at the northeast corner of campus, just east of Memorial Glade. It was built in 1971 and is named after Griffith Conrad Evans, chairman of mathematics from 1934 to 1949.

In the 1990s, this building saw significant renovation including seismic retrofits and a new paint job. Today, the building sports a blue-green exterior with orange-red accents.

Evans Hall is also the building in which the original vi text editor was programmed.

Evans is widely regarded as one of the most depressing buildings on campus due to a number of windowless classrooms. In addition there is a basement computing facility often referred to as "The Dungeon." The printer are named with various underworld overtones such as Styx, Cerberus and Charon.

As part of the University's "New Century Plan", the building is slated for demolition and replacement, due in part to its unsafe earthquake readiness rating. [cite web|url=http://www.cp.berkeley.edu/ncp/portfolio/areaa.html#a11|title=UCB New Century Plan : Area A]
