Academics
It serves girls from ages 3 through 18. Opened in
1895 , it is one of the schools of theGirls' Day School Trust (GDST). Prior to Mrs Griffin taking charge of the school, Mrs Chapman was headmistress for a long and successful period of time which saw the school grow in reputation and numbers. In 2006 Mrs Hilary Jane French took over as Headmistress from Mrs Griffin. Mrs French is a Graduate of Oxford University and has previously been very successful as Headmistress at a number of other educational establishments in the North East.
Uniform
The uniform also underwent a notable change from brown skirt, yellow and brown tie and cream shirt to a purple and grey version after Mrs Chapman's retirement, while the sixth form are able to wear their own clothes. Now the junior school can wear purple instead of the brown.

With the appointment of Mrs Hilary J French the school underwent extensive construction work to modernise the school and provide a wide range of new facilities for the girls such as improved ICT and extra study areas. This building work was completed in late 2006, providing a new drama studio and teaching rooms, sport changing rooms, classrooms, locker rooms and a refurbished hall, which also serves as the school dining hall.
The front grounds of the senior school have recently been modernised and the gardens will be replanted.
