Stuart Rendel, 1st Baron Rendel

Stuart Rendel, 1st Baron Rendel

Stuart Rendel, 1st Baron Rendel of Hatchlands (2 July 1834-4 June 1913) was the Liberal Party Member of Parliament for Montgomeryshire between 1880 and 1894.

Rendel was the son of the civil engineer James Meadows Rendel and his wife Catherine Jane Harris. He was educated at Downside School and Queen's College, Oxford, graduating in Modern History in 1911.

He was the Liberal Party Member of Parliament for Montgomeryshire between 1880 and his retirement in March 1894. Although an Englishman and an Anglican, he was popular in his Welsh-speaking constituency, and was nicknamed "the member for Wales" because of his vocal support for Welsh-related causes, such as the creation of the University of Wales. He also supported disestablishment. He was appointed Steward of the Manor of Northstead and thus resigned from the House of Commons. He was also created Baron Rendel of Hatchlands on his retirement. He died in 1913, and the peerage became extinct upon his death as he had no sons. He did have four daughters and his daughter, Maud Ernestine Rendel married Henry Neville Gladstone, the son of his close friend, William Gladstone. Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendel, a grandson, inherited Hatchlands.
