Sir Alexander Meadows Rendel (
3 April 1828 -23 January 1918 ) was a Britishcivil engineer .Rendel was born in
Plymouth . He was the eldest son of the engineerJames Meadows Rendel and his wife Catherine Harris. His brothers were the civil engineerGeorge Wightwick Rendel and the Liberal MPStuart Rendel, 1st Baron Rendel . He was educated atThe King's School Canterbury and Trinity College, Cambridge.Rendel was the engineer of the
London Dock Company in 1856, and was responsible for theShadwell Basin and theRoyal Albert Dock in London, theAlbert and Edinburgh Docks inLeith ,Workington Dock and Harbour . In 1857-1858 he visited India, and was consulting engineer to theIndia Office , theEast India Railway and other Indian railways, and was a member of the Commission to determine narrow gauge for Indian Railways, in 1870. He was responsible for building theSukkur barrage over theIndus River .He married Eliza Hobson, daughter of the Captain
William Hobson RN, the late firstGovernor of New Zealand . The ceremony was held on27 January 1853 at the Parish Church ofStoke Damerel , Devonport by the Rev James Elliot, uncle of the bride. They had five sons and three daughters.Rendel died at 51 Gordon Square,
London on23 January 1918 .
