December 25 ,1827 –March 23 ,1858 ) was aNebraska democraticpolitician best known for being the second and fourthgovernor of theNebraska Territory . Born inNew York , Cuming attended theUniversity of Michigan and served in theMexican-American War . He was the secretary of the Nebraska Territory from 1854 to 1858. He took over for Francis Burt as Governor of Nebraska Territory at the age of 25 when governor Burt died shortly after taking the oath of office. Cuming's decision to open the territorial legislature atOmaha and his residence in neighboringCouncil Bluffs resulted in much hostility inNebraska City andPlattsmouth . He became governor again 1857 only to die in office onMarch 23 ,1858 during a trip to Omaha. He is buried atProspect Hill Cemetery .Cuming Street in
North Omaha andCuming County, Nebraska were named in his honor.References
