Same-sex union

Same-sex union

Same-sex union may refer to:
* Same-sex relationship, a relationship (sexual or otherwise) between two people of the same sex.

In legal contexts:
* Same-sex marriage - civil marriage between two persons of the same sex.
* "Civil union" and "Civil partnerships" - generally speaking, a status equivalent or identical to marriage for same-sex couples. In the United States, state civil unions do not confer the federal benefits of marriage. In some jurisdictions, civil unions are also open to opposite-sex couples.
* "Domestic partnership" - a term for same-sex unions most often used by states, provinces, or municipalities in North America. Domestic partnerships may also be open to opposite-sex couples. These often include all state marriage rights, but fewer or no federal marriage rights.
* "Registered partnership" -- a term for civil unions in several European countries, such as the Scandinavian countries, Switzerland and states and territories of Australia.
* "Life partnership" - a term for civil unions in Germany.
* "Pacte civil de solidarité" (Civil pact of solidarity) - a term for civil unions in France, also open to opposite-sex couples.
* "Stable union of couples" - a term for civil unions in Andorra.
* "Significant relationship" - a term for civil unions in Tasmania, an Australian state. "Caring relationships" are available for relatives, as well.
* "Reciprocal beneficiaries" - a term for domestic partnerships in Hawaii, an American state, also open to relatives.

In religious contexts:
* Blessing of same-sex unions (also called "holy unions") - the religious recognition of a same-sex couple, such as in locations where government recognition of same-sex couples is not offered.
* "Adelphopoiesis" ("brother-making") a ceremony formerly practiced in the Christian church.
