Shamil Sabirov

Shamil Altaevich Sabirov ( _ru. Шамиль Алтаевич Сабиров) (born April 4, 1959 in Karpinsk, Sverdlovsk Oblast) is a retired boxer, who won the gold medal for the USSR in the light flyweight division (-48 kg) at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. In the final he defeated Cuba's Hipólito Ramos on points (3-2).

A light flyweight, Sabirov was one of the best amateur boxers in the world in the 1970s. He trained at Trud Voluntary Sports Society in Krasnodar and represented it at the national level. He competed for the USSR National Team from 1978 to 1985 and became the Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1980. Sabirov won the gold medal at the European championships in 1979. Two years later, he captured the bronze medal. During his career he won 160 fights out of 180. Sabirov is of Tatar ethnicity.
