Coleg Gorseinon College is a
further education college college situated to the west ofSwansea , in the suburb of UpperLoughor inGorseinon . It is ranked as one of the best colleges inWales and theUnited Kingdom and entry is competitive for places studyingA Levels . Recently the college was rated as 'outstanding' by Her Majesty The Queen's Inspectorate for Education and TrainingThe college was established in 1955 as a mining college for the local area. By 1982, the college became a tertiary
college , and was incorporated in 1993. It has over 2,400 full time students, which places it as a medium sized college by Welsh standards. During the late 1990s, the college had a high increase in the number of students with an FTE base of 1,800. Gorseinon College offers a range of course from over 42 A andAS level subjects ranging fromClassics toArchaeology toMathematics andMedia Studies , over 20 vocational subjects from Motor Vehicles toEngineering toInformation Technology . The College also has several other preparation courses such as Army andOxbridge preparation Courses.Campus and Catchment Area
The College operates on several different sites in Gorseinon and the surrounding villages as well as one site in the neighbouring town of

Pontarddulais and Penyrheol. The College also serves and recruits from the surrounding nine wards. However, the college tends to attract students from all over the City and County ofSwansea as well as the adjacent local authorities ofCarmarthenshire andNeath Port Talbot .Mission Statement

* 94.7% overall pass rate in AVCEs
* 100% overall pass rate in BTEC national diplomas and certificates
* 94.2% overall pass rate in BTEC first diplomasIn recent years the College has proved successful in the number of students it sends to University, with over 30 students being accepted into
Oxbridge (Oxford and Cambridge Universities), (six in 2005), and seven students being offered a scholarship at theUniversity of Wales, Aberystwyth . The College also won the Beacon Award in 1999-2000, 2003-2004 along with being highly commended in 2003-2004.External links
