Patrick Phelan (musician)

Patrick Phelan (born 1975), is a singer-songwriter from Richmond, Virginia. In addition to being the frontman for South, he has collaborated with various members of the Virginian indie rock scene, including touring Sparklehorse member Paul Watson and Jim Thomson (Bio Ritmo, GWAR).

Background

Patrick Phelan started writing music around the age of 18 while living in southern Virginia. After moving to Richmond, Virginia in 1993, Phelan joined the band Minnow as a bassist. Minnow was the beginnings of Richmond's minimal, ambient band South. After the formation of South, Phelan began to record and compose his own music.

In April 2000, "Songs of Patrick Phelan" was released. This was a solo effort, with Phelan recording most of the tracks himself. His sophomore full-length recording, entitled "Parlor", differed from the debut in that it was a collaborative, studio effort that focused less on guitar work and more reliant on piano. Some of the artists that joined him in the studio and on stage include Paul Watson (with previous contributions to FSK, Sparklehorse, Michael Hurley and House of Freaks), Jim Thomson, and Phil Murphy.
