Pinyin (zh-cp|c=拼音|p=pīnyīn) is a system of romanization for the Chinese language, where "pin" means "spell" and "yin" means "sound". It can refer to several transcription systems for Chinese:
* Hanyu Pinyin, what most people mean when referring to pinyin
* Tongyong Pinyin, a derivative of Hanyu Pinyin used officially in the Republic of China (Taiwan) from 2002–2008
* Weituoma Pīnyīn (Wēituǒmǎ Pīnyīn), the Chinese name for the Wade-Giles system of Mandarin language romanization
* Standard Cantonese Pinyin, a standard romanization of Cantonese used in Hong Kong
* Yale Romanization, four romanization systems of Asian languages (Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, and Japanese) created during World War II for use by United States military personnel
