The airport was established as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan to train pilots during World War II. In 1966, Southport was known as the Canadian Forces Base Portage la Prairie. [http://www.alliedwings.ca/company_history.asp Company History ] It is now commercially operated.
Canadian Wings Aviation Training Centre operation of Allied Wings is based at the airport. Canadian Wings provides pilot training to the Canadian Forces Air Command. Canadian Wings is a joint venture between Kelowna Flightcraft Ltd., Canadian Helicopters, Atlantis Systems International, and Canadian Base Operators.
