USS "Racine" (PF-100), a "Tacoma"-class
frigate , was the first ship of theUnited States Navy to be named forRacine, Wisconsin .The first "Racine" (PF-100) was laid down by the
American Ship Building Company , inCleveland, Ohio ,14 September 1943 ; launched on15 March 1944 , sponsored by Mrs. Francis H. Wendt; and commissioned on22 January 1945 atHouston, Texas , withLieutenant Commander C. H. Waring,USCG , in command.A Navy patrol frigate manned by the Coast Guard, "Racine" underwent
shakedown offBermuda andGuantanamo Bay, Cuba , escorting the Italiansubmarine "Atropo" from one to the other. Returning to the east coast, she departedNorfolk, Virginia , on2 April forOran, Algeria , withconvoy UGS 84, returning to theUnited States with convoy GUS 86.After training exercises in
Casco Bay, Maine , and conversion atNew York to a weather patrol ship for distant duty, "Racine" steamed7 August for thePanama Canal andPearl Harbor . On6 September she departed Pearl Harbor forTacloban ,Leyte Gulf ,Philippine Islands , arriving there on23 September to serve as a weather station ship. On14 April 1946 she departedSamar, Philippine Islands , to return to the United States, arriving at Seattle on12 May ."Racine" decommissioned at
Bremerton, Washington , on27 June 1946 and was struck from theNavy list on19 July 1946. She was sold toFranklin Ship Wrecking Company , ofHillside, New Jersey , on2 December 1947 for scrapping.See also
