USS "Gladwyne" (PF-62), a "Tacoma"-class
frigate , was the only ship of theUnited States Navy to be named forGladwyne, Pennsylvania . Originally named "Worcester" afterWorcester, Massachusetts , the name was changed in order to give the name "Worcester" to a newlight cruiser under construction (USS "Worcester" (CL-144))"Gladwyne" (PF-62), was launched on on
7 January 1944 at theGlobe Shipbuilding Company inSuperior, Wisconsin , sponsored by Mrs. Phyllis M. Bennett; and commissioned on21 November 1944, withLieutenant Commander R. G. Miller,USCG , in command.After shakedown, "Gladwyne" sailed from
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , on21 January 1945 forCasco Bay, Maine , arriving there 2 days later. Following training exercises there, she made two round trip trans-atlanticconvoy escort voyages toOran, Algeria , one each from New York andNorfolk, Virginia , from6 February through14 May 1945, returning toBoston, Massachusetts , each time. Refresher training at Casco Bay occupied June, and on31 July "Gladwyne" sailed from Boston viaPanama to thePacific .On
29 August , Gladwyne and USS "Moberly" (PF-63) sailed for theMarshall Islands to beginweather station andplane guard patrols. The frigates reachedMajuro on5 September , and during the next months they alternated on patrolling their assigned area out of Majuro and later out ofKwajalein . "Gladwyne" then sailed toPearl Harbor putting in there on27 December 1945. Underway again on23 February 1946 , "Gladwyne" returned to Majuro and patrolled on weather station until mooring atSan Francisco, California , on9 April .Decommissioned there on
15 April 1946 , she was stricken from theNavy List on8 October 1946 and sold to the Mexican Government on24 November 1947 . She servedMexico as "Papaloapan" until disposed of in 1965.See also
