Fifth Avenue Coach Company and Surface Transit

Fifth Avenue Coach Company and Surface Transit

Fifth Avenue Coach Company and Surface Transit operated bus routes on Manhattan until it went bankrupt in 1962.

The Fifth Avenue Coach Company was privately operated and the Surface Transportation Company was the successor company to bus and trolley routes of the Third Avenue Railway System (TARS). Fifth Avenue Coach was a money losing operation, while Surface was making a profit. New management took over Fifth Avenue and precipitated a strike which crippled transportation in Manhattan, as far as commuters went. Really, it wasn’t that big a thing but New Yorkers took their bus service for granted in those days and never noticed Fifth Avenue Coach until it stopped. The solution was for the city to buy Fifth Avenue Coach (which was the idea from the beginning) and merge it with Surface. Surface couldn't overcome the deficit generated by Fifth Avenue Coach, and, as ROBERT MOSES highways were carving up The Bronx, assets were being shifted to Manhattan. By the way, this is the reason some of the long bus lines in Manhattan are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. and there are also the 101, 102, 103 and 104. They were the old Surface and Third Avenue lines from northern Manhattan downtown.

Bus service on Manhattan began in 1886 (likely horse drawn) and went electric in 1898.

The routes of the FACCST was taken over by Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority.
