Angiulo Brothers

Angiulo Brothers

The Angiulo Brothers (Donato, Francesco, Gennaro, James, and Nicolò), were the leading Italian-American crime group from Boston's North End, during the 1950s and early 60s. As made guys in the Patriarca crime family, they were placed in control of the racketeering throughout Massachusetts, until Irish Mob groups such as the Winter Hill Gang and the Charlestown Mob decided to run the rackets in their own neighborhoods. During this time Winter Hill Gang members James J. Bulger and Stephen Flemmi were informing on their Italian mob colleagues by allowing the FBI to bug their headquarters during the early 1980s. Thereby, the Italians lost power in the area altogether.

Even among organized crime members Gennaro Anguilo was unliked. He was an egomaniac and had his "Gennaro" named after himself. He had a habit of referring to BPD officers as "Irish pieces of shit", and he was even more obsessed than most mobsters with possessing money. The FBI had been after him since the early 1960's when they planted an illegal bug in a bar he owned on Tremont Street. Gennaro Angiulo was granted parole and was released from federal prison on September 14, 2007. He was arrested in 1983 at his North End hangout, then convicted three years later on racketeering charges. Angiulo was brought down after the FBI planted bugging devices in his headquarters, with the help of FBI informants James "Whitey" Bulger and Steven Flemmi.
