Stella D'Oro is a
brand ofcookie s andbreadstick s formerly owned byKraft Foods . Stella D'Oro was established in 1930 by Joseph Kresivich, who had immigrated to theUnited States fromTrieste ,Italy in 1922. Stella D'Oro means "star of gold" in Italian, and the cookies are inspired by Italian baking. Stella D'Oro products includecookies ,breakfast treat s,biscotti andbreadstick s.In January 2006, Stella D'Oro was acquired by Brynwood Partners, a private equity firm. It continued to operate as the Stella D'Oro Company on West 237th Street at the north end of
Kingsbridge, Bronx .In late December 2006, the company moved part of its manufacturing and cookie production to New Jersey.
After buying the company, Kraft became embroiled in controversy relating to a cost-cutting decision which removed the
Pareve designation from their baked products. Removing the guarantee that the products were dairy-free had an impact on sales. After seeing sales drop and after hearing from their customers they restored thePareve designation.
