- Carter Family Fold
The Carter Family Fold is a site dedicated to the preservation and performance of old time country and
folk music . As the name suggests, it honors theCarter Family : A.P., Sara, and Maybelle.The Carter Family Fold is dedicated to the preservation and presentation of the region's traditional music through weekly concerts. To stay true to the music, no electric instruments are allowed. Also, smoking and drinking are prohibited.
Most of the performers are not famous outside the communities of bluegrass and
folk music . However,Johnny Cash played at the Fold many times, and played his last concert there a few months before his death; Cash's wife,June Carter Cash , was part of the family honored at the venue.There is also a dance floor at which Appalachian clogging, a form of folk dancing, is a weekly occurrence.
The Carter Family Fold is located in the
Poor Valley region of Virginia, at the foot ofClinch Mountain . Formally, it is part ofHiltons becauseMaces Spring, Virginia , the "home base" of the Carter family, no longer has a post office.Capacity at the Fold is very limited and those wishing to attend a show there are advised to request their
tickets well in advance.A controversey between some descendants of the Carter Family and members of the Carter Family Memorial Music Center Board of Trustees erupted in late 2007. A group calling itself "Friends of the Carter Family Fold" maintains a web site at http://www.friendsofthefold.org/index.html.
