He played for four different teams: the Pittsburgh Pirates (1992–1999), the
San Diego Padres (2000), theSeattle Mariners (2000–2001), and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2003). His best season was in 1996 when he hit .300 with 18home run s and 72 RBIs. That year he also stole 38 bases.Controversies
Martin claimed to have played football at
University of Southern California . In 2001, he compared a collision with Seattle teammateCarlos Guillén to the time he tried to tackle Michigan running backLeroy Hoard in 1986, when he was playing strong safety at Southern California. In actuality, USC and Michigan did not meet that year, and Martin was an outfielder in theAtlanta Braves ' system at the time. Furthermore, USC has no record that Martin ever attended the university [http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2001/0828/1244997.html] .In a September 1996 game against the Chicago Cubs, Al Martin spit out a large wad of sunflower seeds immediately after hitting a home run, prompting complaints from several viewers that Martin intentionally vomited on the field (similar to

Again a year later on October 17th, 2007 as a guest this time onJimmy Kimmel Live he calledJoe Torre an "idiot" for not taking his players off the field during the playoffs. On March 19th, 2008 theSeattle Mariners asked Martin to be their bench coach which he accepted. Martin was fired early before the regular season had started because of racial statements regardingRichie Sexson and had called the City of Seattle a "dump". He is currently on the market for managers and is a potential frontrunner to replaceNed Yost in Milwaukee.ee also
