- Seven hills of Seattle
Seattle, Washington is sometimes claimed to have been built on seven hills. Many other cities of the world have similar traditions.Rome , for example, was said to have been built on seven hills, as was the city later founded to succeed it as the capital of theRoman Empire ,Constantinople .There is no firm consensus on precisely which hills constitute the seven hills of Seattle.
Walt Crowley considered the following the "main candidates":
* First Hill, also known as 'Pill Hill' for its preponderance of hospitals
* Yesler Hill, also known as Profanity Hill in what is now the First Hill neighborhood, site of present-dayHarborview Medical Center and the Yesler Terrace housing project.
* Second Hill or Renton Hill (both names have passed out of common usage; it referred to an area roughly centered at 18th Avenue and Madison Street, and in present-day parlance would be considered to constitute upper Capitol Hill and upper First Hill.) *Denny Hill (razed, see sub article for details on the Denny regrade project.)
* Capitol Hill
*Queen Anne Hill
* Beacon HillArguably
West Seattle should be included in this list; however it was originally incorporated as a separate city, pre-dating Seattle, and not annexed by Seattle until 1907 [http://www.historylink.org/essays/output.cfm?file_id=3428] . Other hills sometimes said to be among the original seven include:
* Magnolia
* Crown Hill (not annexed until 1954 [http://www.historylink.org/essays/output.cfm?file_id=7514] )Notes
