Glenn L. Cowan (
August 25 ,1952 –April 6 ,2004 ) was an American table tennis player, and arguably one of the two critical personalities, another one being the Chinese table tennis playerZhuang Zedong , in the 1971Ping Pong Diplomacy which served as aprelude to the normalization of theSino-American relations .Cowan, a former
Santa Monica College student, died in 2004. He had been hospitalized forpsychiatric treatment and underwent abypass surgery . During the surgery, he went into acoma and died of a heart attack.Zhuang Zedong called fromBeijing to express his sympathy, and in 2007 visited the United States, and met Cowan's mom. He called never seeing Cowan again the greatest "regret of my life."External links
