Papantzin

Papantzin

Papantzin was an Aztec princess and sister of Moctezuma II. In 1509, she fell seriously ill and became comatose. The Aztecs laid in a tomb, believing she was dead, but almost immediately, reports of the day claim that she cried out to be released. She related a dream, in which a luminous being led her to the shore of the boundless ocean, and several large ships appeared with black crosses on their sails similar to that on her guide's forehead. The princess was informed that the men in the ships came from a distant land and would conquer the country and bring a knowledge of the true God. Moctezuma read the doom of his empire in this.

Later, after the Spanish conquest of Mexico, Papantzin was one of the first Aztecs to convert to Christianity, in 1525.
