C. L. A. Smith

Charles Lawrence Arthur Smith (1 January 1879-22 November 1949) was an English cricketer.

C.L.A. Smith was born in Henfield, Sussex and played first-class cricket for Sussex between 1898 and 1911. He captained the county team between 1906 and 1909. He was the second of only six native-born cricketers to captain the county club.

He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler. He played in 220 matches, scoring 5844 runs at an average of 19.54, with two hundreds and 23 fifties. He took 148 catches and took nine wickets at an average of 65.00. His best bowling performance was 1-0.

He died at Wineham, Henfield in 1949, aged 70.

His father C.H. Smith and uncle A. Smith also played first-class cricket for the county.
