It was formerly known as the Regulatory Authority for Telecommunications and Posts (German: "Regulierungsbehörde für Telekommunikation und Post", RegTP).

On July 13, 2005, the Government decided to rename the agency to Bundesnetzagentur (Federal Network Agency). Its purpose will be extended to the train market and to internet services.

The regulatory office primary purpose is the regulation of former governmental market segments which have been released into public economy. The FNA regulates for example the carrier pricing within the telco sector.
