Kittur

Kittur, a village of Belgaum district, Karnataka state, is a place of historical significance. Queen Chennamma of Kittur (1778-1829) is known for her resistance to British Raj.

During British India, it came under Bombay Presidency. It contains a ruined fort, formerly the residence of the chief of Kittur. In connexion with a disputed succession to this chiefship in 1824, St John Thackeray commissioner of Dharwad, was killed in a battle when approaching the Kittur fort. Later another unit stormed Kittur and captured Channamma, who was imprisoned in BailHongal Jail. She breathed her last in the Jail. Channamma became a legend.
