Republic Gardens

Republic Gardens

Republic Gardens is a nightclub located in Washington, D.C. It first opened in the 1920s and operated as a popular nightime attraction for several decades. During its early years, notable musicians such as Cab Calloway performed at the nightclub. Republic Gardens closed and remained vacant until 1996, when club promoter Marc Barnes purchased and reopened the nightclub. During the late 1990s, it catered to a young and professional urban crowd, and was a part of the resurgence of the U Street area of Washington, D.C. Barnes operated the club for several years until he sold it in 2003 to Whitney Restaurants, Inc. Whitney Restaurants, Inc. operated Republic Gardens until October 29, 2007, when the nightclub was evicted from its building.
