geologist and paleontologist.He was born near Oxford,
Ohio , and was educated atMiami University and at Yale, where he graduated in 1882. He was assistant paleontologist to theUnited States Geological Survey from 1882 to 1888. He was employed in various places thereafter, including professor of geology in the University of Nebraska.Barbour became director of the
University of Nebraska State Museum and founded its vertebrate paleontology collections in 1891. He remained the director until 1941.
