Queen's Film Theatre, Belfast
- Queen's Film Theatre, Belfast
The Queen's Film Theatre, or QFT for short, is an art house cinema in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is the largest cultural cinema in Ireland. It houses two medium sized screens featuring luxury French seating. In 2004 it underwent an extensive refurbishment and now includes a bright, modern bar and a new entrance on to University Square, which is the site of its owners - Queen's University Belfast.
History
The QFT opened in 1968. Financial difficulties and problems with attracting funding have dogged the cinema over the years, but it has remained in constant operation apart from a short closure in 1972. In 1996 it presented one of the largest seasons of classic cinema to celebrate the Centenary of Cinema. It currently has a sponsorship deal with Stella Artois.
Michael Open was the cinema's director from 1968 until 2004, except for a three-year period during the mid 1970s when it was run by Robert Caldicott. Graeme Farrow now directs operations, as well as running the Belfast Festival at Queen's. The QFT also hosts the majority of the Belfast Film Festival screenings.
