Elliott Sober is
Hans Reichenbach Professor and William F. Vilas Research Professor in the Department of Philosophy atUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison . Sober is noted for his work inphilosophy of biology and generalphilosophy of science . Sober taught for one year atStanford University and has been a regular visiting professor at theLondon School of Economics . He earned hisPh.D in philosophy fromHarvard University under the supervision ofHilary Putnam . His work has also been strongly influenced by the biologistRichard Lewontin , and he has collaborated with biologistDavid Sloan Wilson . Sober has been a prominent critic ofintelligent design .One of Sober's key fields of research has been the subject of simplicity or
parsimony in connection with theory evaluation in the philosophy of science. To this end he published "Simplicity" (1975) and, since then, a growing number of influential articles in mainstream philosophical journals.Besides contributing to philosophy, Sober also works in the field of
social psychology . Sober is currently on the Editorial Board of Greater Good Magazine, published by theGreater Good Science Center of theUniversity of California, Berkeley . Sober's contributions include the interpretation of scientific research into the roots of compassion, altruism, and peaceful human relationships.Published books
